Foam Core vs Honeycomb: What Is Actually Inside Your Paddle

Polymer honeycomb returns energy. Foam absorbs it. That one difference explains almost everything about how a paddle feels, and it is the part nobody shows you.

You can see the face of a paddle. You will never see the core, which is unfortunate, because the core does more to determine how a paddle feels than the face does. It sets the dwell time, the size of the sweet spot, how much of the ball's energy comes back, and how the paddle sounds.

There are two fundamental approaches, and a lot of marketing language layered on top of them. Here is the actual engineering.

The short answer. Polymer honeycomb is a lattice of hollow cells that springs back and returns energy, giving a crisp, lively, powerful paddle. Foam is a solid closed-cell material that absorbs and releases energy more slowly, giving a softer, quieter paddle with longer dwell and more control. Neither is newer or better in the abstract. They are different tools.

Polymer honeycomb: the long-standing standard

Open up a conventional paddle and you find a lattice of hexagonal cells, almost always polypropylene, sandwiched between two face sheets. The hexagon is used for the same reason it is used in aircraft panels and packaging: it gives high stiffness for very low weight.

On impact, the cell walls compress slightly and spring back. That rebound is what makes a honeycomb paddle feel lively and crisp. Compared with foam, polymer honeycomb returns more energy and produces higher ball speed for the same swing effort.

Cell size is the variable most buyers never hear about. Smaller cells mean more cell walls per square inch, which makes a firmer, more responsive, slightly louder paddle. Larger cells mean fewer walls, a softer feel and a smaller effective sweet spot. Two paddles both described as "polymer honeycomb" can play completely differently on cell size alone.

Honeycomb dominated what the industry now calls Gen 2 and Gen 3 paddles, and it remains the right answer for a very large share of players.

Foam: solid, quiet, and slower to release

Foam cores replace the lattice with an engineered closed-cell material. EVA is the most familiar, and newer builds use EPP and MPP foams that can be tuned far more precisely.

A closed-cell foam does not spring back the way a cell wall does. It compresses, absorbs the impact and releases it over a longer window. The results are consistent and predictable: the paddle is quieter, the feel is softer, dwell time is longer, and the ball sits on the face a fraction longer before leaving.

Longer dwell is the point. It gives you more time for the face texture to grip the ball, which is why foam builds often pair well with a high-friction face, and it gives more feedback on resets and dinks.

The trade-off is raw pop. A foam core that absorbs energy is, by definition, returning less of it. Modern foam builds recover much of this through construction, but the underlying physics does not change.

The generation labels, decoded

Paddle marketing leans heavily on generation numbers. They are informal industry shorthand, not a standard, but they do track real changes in how paddles are built.

These labels are industry convention rather than a governing-body standard. Treat them as a rough map, not a spec.

One correction worth making, because it is misstated constantly: thermoforming is a construction process, not a core type. Both foam and honeycomb paddles can be thermoformed, and both can be cold-pressed. We cover that in thermoformed vs cold-pressed paddles.

Full foam vs foam enhanced

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

Foam enhanced means a honeycomb core with high-density foam injected into the perimeter walls. The foam is structural, stiffening the frame so the paddle loses less energy on off-centre contact. The effective sweet spot grows toward the edges and the top corners come alive. The core is still honeycomb.

Full foam means the honeycomb is gone and the entire core is foam. This gives designers much finer control, because foam density can be varied across the paddle in a way a uniform lattice cannot. It also reduces the risk of core crush, since there are no cell walls to collapse.

If a paddle is advertised as having "foam" without specifying which, it is almost always foam-enhanced honeycomb. That is not a criticism, it is a very good construction. It is just a different one.

Which core suits which player

Choose polymer honeycomb if

You want pop and a lively, crisp response, you play a driving game, or you are buying for a broad group of mixed-ability players. It is the most forgiving choice commercially because it plays the way people expect a paddle to play.

Choose a foam-enhanced build if

You want honeycomb's energy return but a bigger usable sweet spot. This is often the best all-round answer, and it is where a lot of serious play has landed.

Choose full foam if

Control is the priority, you play a reset and dink-heavy game, or noise is a genuine constraint. Foam cores are meaningfully quieter, which matters more than people expect for clubs, residential communities and facilities dealing with noise complaints.

The noise point is worth pausing on. If you are a club, HOA or facility facing pressure about court noise, core construction is one of the few levers you actually control. A foam core paddle is quieter at the source than a honeycomb one. It will not solve a noise dispute on its own, but it is a real and often overlooked part of the answer.

How core interacts with thickness

Core material and core thickness are separate decisions that people routinely merge. A thicker core gives more control and a larger sweet spot regardless of material, and a thinner core gives more pop. So a thin foam core and a thick honeycomb core can end up feeling closer to each other than either does to its own thicker or thinner sibling.

This is the part of a custom paddle that almost never gets specified, and it is the part that determines whether the paddles get used after the event.

Most custom suppliers hold one blank in stock and print on it. You get whatever core they bought.
