Why Paddles Die: Delamination, Core Crush and Real Lifespan

One failure makes a paddle more powerful and illegal. The other makes it quietly dead. Most players cannot tell them apart, and the difference decides whether you have a warranty claim.

Paddles do not usually break. They degrade, and they do it in three distinct ways that get lumped together as "my paddle feels off".

Telling them apart matters. One of them is a manufacturing defect you should be raising with whoever sold you the paddle. One is normal wear. And one makes your paddle illegal for sanctioned play without you necessarily noticing.

The short answer. Delamination is the face separating from the core, creating an air gap. It makes the paddle louder and more powerful, and it is a manufacturing failure. Core crush is the core collapsing under repeated impact, producing dead spots and less power. Texture wear is the face going smooth and losing spin. Only the first is usually a defect.

Delamination: louder, hotter, and illegal

Delamination is a bond failure. The face layer separates from the core and an air gap opens between them.

Counterintuitively, this makes the paddle better before it makes it worse. The unsupported face flexes and springs back like a trampoline, and the ball comes off dramatically faster. Players often describe a paddle that has suddenly become powerful, accompanied by a distinctly louder, hollower pop on contact.

That sound is the diagnostic. A delaminated paddle rings differently from a healthy one, and tapping around the face will often produce an obviously different note over the affected area.

Why it happens

Delamination is a manufacturing problem, not a wear problem. It comes down to adhesion: poor resin systems, ineffective adhesives, or a cure schedule that did not properly bond face to core.

It shows up disproportionately in thermoformed paddles, and there is a straightforward reason. Thermoforming requires extended exposure to high heat, and that heat can degrade the adhesive system it depends on. Why it matters beyond feel

A delaminated paddle exceeds the power limits it was certified against. USA Pickleball caps the trampoline effect through the Paddle-Ball Coefficient of Restitution test, which was set at 0.44 from 1 November 2024 and tightened to 0.43 from 1 November 2025. A paddle that has delaminated is almost certainly over that line.

That makes it illegal for sanctioned play regardless of whether it was legal when you bought it, and it is exactly what the on-site testing programmes now rolling out at tournaments are designed to catch. If your paddle suddenly got hot, it is not broken in. It is broken.

Core crush: quiet and gradual

Core crush is the opposite failure. The cell walls of a honeycomb core collapse under repeated impact, and the core loses its structure.

There is no dramatic symptom. The paddle just gets worse. Specific areas of the face go dead, the ball comes off slower from those spots, and the sweet spot shrinks. Because it happens gradually, most players adapt to it without registering that anything changed, then notice immediately when they pick up a new paddle.

It happens two ways. Poor manufacturing produces a core that was never structurally adequate and fails early. Or it happens as genuine wear, because repeated high-impact contact fatigues any honeycomb structure eventually.

The second kind is not a defect. It is the paddle reaching the end of its life. A full foam core largely designs this failure out, since there are no cell walls to collapse, which is one of the real arguments for foam construction covered in foam core vs honeycomb.

Texture wear: the third one

The most common complaint of all is not a structural failure at all. The face texture polishes smooth, friction drops, and spin goes with it.

Nothing has broken. The paddle still hits the same, it just no longer grips the ball. On sprayed grit faces this can happen inside a year. On raw carbon it typically becomes noticeable between 6 and 12 months of committed play. Aramid faces hold on considerably longer.

A quick field test: tap around the face with a knuckle. A clear change in note across a region points to delamination or a crushed area beneath.

How long should a paddle actually last

The honest range for a player in regular competitive use is 6 to 12 months before performance decline becomes noticeable. That is the point at which texture has usually gone and the core has taken meaningful fatigue.

Players at the top of the sport replace far more often, commonly every 50 to 100 hours of play, because they are chasing consistency rather than serviceability.

Recreational play is a completely different picture. A paddle used once or twice a week casually can stay perfectly good for years, because the failure modes above are all driven by impact count and impact energy.

For clubs, facilities and programmes: plan on replacement cycles rather than treating paddles as durable assets. Shared paddles absorb far more impact hours than an individual's paddle does, and a rack of dead paddles is a worse look than a smaller rack of good ones. Core and face choice can extend the cycle substantially, which is worth specifying up front rather than discovering later.

What this means when you are ordering

Delamination risk is a function of resin system and cure control. Core crush resistance is a function of core material and density. Texture life is a function of whether the surface is peel ply or sprayed grit. None of these appear on a typical product listing, and all three determine whether your order is still good in a year.

This is the difference between a supplier who prints on a blank and one who specifies a build. If you are ordering paddles that people are actually going to play with, particularly for a club programme or a brand you are putting your name on, these are the questions worth asking before you commit.
