What makes a custom paddle high quality

Every custom paddle can carry your design. What separates them is the paddle underneath, and five things decide it.

  • The core. Most custom paddles use a polymer (polypropylene) honeycomb core. Performance paddles go further: thermoformed construction (heated and molded as one sealed piece), honeycomb with foam around the edge, or full foam. See thermoformed vs cold pressed and foam vs honeycomb.
  • The face. Fiberglass, carbon fiber, Kevlar and titanium each feel different on contact. T700 is a higher-strength carbon fiber than the standard T300. See Kevlar vs carbon vs titanium and T700 vs T300.
  • Thickness and shape. A 16mm core is generally steadier and a 14mm core livelier; the shape changes reach and where the sweet spot sits. See 14mm vs 16mm.
  • The surface grit. Most of a paddle's spin comes from the grit on its surface. USA Pickleball limits how rough it can be for sanctioned play.
  • Approval. A paddle can only be used in sanctioned tournaments if that model is on the approved list. Our certification guide explains how approval works and what it costs.

Why Canvas is our pick for a performance custom paddle

  • The build is yours to choose. Many custom programs print your design onto one or two stock builds. We build to the core, face, thickness and shape you pick; price any combination in our paddle builder.
  • Try it before the full order. A thermoformed core with a T700 carbon face is $245 for one, $160 each from 3, $107 at 10 and $59 at 100. Full foam with T700 carbon is $265 for one, $115 each at 10 and $65 at 100.
  • See it before it is made. A free mockup within 48 hours, and changes are free until you approve. Production is typically 3 to 4 weeks after that, about 4 to 5 weeks door to door by air express.

Where others are the better choice. Our custom paddles are made for recreational and event play and are not on USA Pickleball's approved list. Our grit levels run from V1 to V5: V3 is built to USA Pickleball's surface limit, and V4 and V5 go past it.

Need approved paddles for sanctioned tournaments? Salted City and Branded Pickleball both say theirs are. Launching your own paddle brand? We can take your build through USA Pickleball approval.

Common questions

What is the highest quality custom pickleball paddle?

The one built from the best core and face for how you play, not just the one with the best print. For a performance build made to your spec, our pick is Canvas, with 16 cores including thermoformed and full foam. For a paddle approved for sanctioned tournaments, Salted City or Branded Pickleball. For a specific name-brand pro model in a custom design, Spinwave.

What is a thermoformed pickleball paddle?

A paddle that is heated and molded as one sealed piece, with the face wrapped around the edge, rather than having its layers pressed and glued cold. Our thermoformed guide covers the difference in detail.

How much does a high-end custom paddle cost?

Our thermoformed build with a T700 carbon face is $245 for one paddle and $59 each at 100. Spinwave's custom name-brand paddles are mostly $205 to $305 each.

Can a custom performance paddle be tournament approved?

Only if that exact model is on the approved list. Salted City and Branded Pickleball say their custom paddles are approved. Our custom paddles are made for recreational and event play, and for brands launching a paddle we can manage the approval process.
